Exciting times

Wednesday 8 February 2023

We were well represented at recent, Better Access discussions by our President, Professor Michael Hazelton, who advocated to the Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Mark Butler MP and Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, the Hon Emma McBride MP, the need for mental health nurses to have an enhanced role delivering services. This position was met with support from other attending medical organisations and peak bodies, who called on the federal ministers to give mental health nurses more opportunities to support the healthcare sector.

Recently, the College engaged with The Sydney Morning Herald about reports on restrain and seclusion practices being used in mental health unites. Thankfully, past President Professor Eimear Muir-Cochrane was able to provide expert commentary on the matter.

The College was invited to submit an application and confirmation of the Federal status of ‘Credentialed Mental Health Nurse’ status as through the ACMHN. This official recognition ensures that the ACMHN can progress the good work and official recognition of our Credentialed Mental Health Nurses.

The Board unanimously approved the development and launch of a new member program over the next few months. Watch this exciting space for news.

At the same time the College will be revamping the member database system in the next few months that will see greater functionality and smoother processes.

Yours in mental health

Adrian Armitage

ACMHN CEO
