ACMHN have a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of a highly committed group of people from diverse professional backgrounds. The skills of our board include medicine, health, legal, finance, community and business.
Mike Hazelton RN CMHN BA MA PhD FACMHN holds the positions of Conjoint Professor at the University of Newcastle and Adjunct Professor at Charles Sturt University. Mike retired as Professor of Mental Health Nursing at the University of Newcastle in February 2020, a position he held since 2001. Dr Hazelton has had extensive experience leading schools of nursing and midwifery at the University of Newcastle (2006-2013), Curtin University (1998-2002), the University of Tasmania (1996-1998).
Vicki Has Worked In Mental Health Since 1990 And Over This Time She Has Developed An Enthusiasm For Recovery Based Outcomes For Mental Health Consumers And Their Families. Vicki Is Committed To The Principles Of Recovery In All Settings And Has Previously Served On The Board Of A Consumer Operated Service. Vicki Has Held The Senior Leadership Position Of Service Director Since 2014 With Gold Coast Health Mental Health And Specialist Services Where She Is Responsible For Leading Leaders In Their Daily Delivery Of Services. Vicki Drives A Culture Of Compassion, Integrity And Professionalism.
James Houghton completed all his nursing training in NZ and was originally a member of what was then the Australia New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses (ANZCMHN). In 2005 he moved to Melbourne and started working for North Western Mental Health (NWMH) auspiced under Melbourne Health at Orygen Youth Health in Footscray. After a brief spell working for Monash Health James came back to NWMH as Clinical Nurse Educator on John Cade L1 at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2011.
John Hurley is a Professor of mental health at Southern Cross University and works clinically at Headspace Coffs Harbour as a credentialed mental health nurse. He has accumulated over 35 years’ experience as a mental health practitioner through developing and leading psychiatric crisis and home treatment services in both Australia and the United Kingdom.
Dr Andrew Gardner is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at the University of Queensland, where he coordinates the postgraduate mental health nursing program and teaches in both the undergraduate and post graduate mental health programs. Andrew has worked in several senior clinical roles as a mental health nurse in a variety of mental health service settings in Australia. He was also a successful Chief Executive Officer for a number of country hospitals in South Australia.
DONNA HANSEN VELLA
Donna commenced her mental health nursing studies in 1991, having experienced direct entry psychiatric nursing preparation in Melbourne. She has also successfully completed a Bachelor of Nursing, Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Clinical Nursing (Psychiatric and Mental Health), a Graduate Certificate in Family Sensitive Practice and Family Therapy, undertaken the Clinical Supervision for Role Development 8 Day ‘Foundational Training’ course and is currently undertaking a Masters in Health Administration.
Monica has been an active member of the ACMHN since 2014 and has been Chair of the WA Branch of ACMHN since 2018. With a small committee the WA Branch has run x 2 successful and profitable symposiums and has established and maintained relationships with key stakeholders such as sponsors, College of Psychiatrist WA Branch, WA Department of Health, Non-Government Organisations, Advisory Council and WA Mental Health Commission.
